Difference between Website and Web Portal

Main Difference

All images, files and pages under a domain name is called website. A Web Portal is basically a gateway to the internet, it is not only a website but from here you can search web or more. A Web Portal is not only a source of information but it provides data retrieval from different sources.

Website

A website is under a domain name having pages, images, documents, files or videos relative to common URL.  The pages of a website are accessible from a common URL and commonly on the same physical server. e.g. www.onlineshopping.com

Web Portal

A Web Portal is basically a gateway to the internet, it is not only a website but from here you can search web, online shopping, search engines and forums. It is an organized  gateway to have the access on the data or information on the internet. e.g. www.yahoo.com

Key Differences

  • Website is a Public Interface while Web Portal is a Public & Private Interface
  • In website user is confined to specific data but in Web Portal user has an access to broad resources.
