Difference between Electrical and Electronics

By Jaxson

Main Difference

Electrical and electronics seems to be the same technologies but are different in actual sense. Both deals with the electrons for making current to run the appliances. Electrical circuits lacks decision making ability while electronic circuit can take decisions. In a microwave oven, it makes a signal when the food gets cooked and thus is an electronic circuit. A washing machine carry both electrical and electronic circuits. Socket, fuse and motor are electrical while the programming is done to control the rotation of the drum which is the electronic part. Heavy transformers used in transmission are electrical while small transformers used in toys and chargers are electronics equipment.

Electrical

Electrical circuits don’t have the ability to make decisions. Electrical appliances are mostly large and deal with high current and voltage. Motors that run on 11 kV or more. Generators producing 100 KW or more. Mostly operate in AC. Generators, large transformers, heavy motors are electrical devices.

Electronics

Electronics circuits have the decision making ability. Electronic appliances are mostly small and deal with low voltage and current. Mostly operate on 3-12 V DC. Cell phones, laptops, radio and microwave oven are electronic devices.

Key Differences

  • Electrical circuits don’t have the ability to make decisions while electronics circuits have the decision making ability.
  • Electrical mostly deal with high voltage and current while electronics deal with low voltage and current.
  • Heavy transformers used in transmission are electrical while small transformers used in toys and chargers are electronics equipment.
  • Electrical mostly deal with AC but not always and electronics mostly deal with DC but not always.
  • Most electronic appliances use 3-12 V DC while most of the electrical appliances uses 220 V AC.
  • In computer electronic components are more than electrical component.
  • Electronics is  about the study of diodes and semiconductor but electrical is study of  how electricity transmit, motors and generators
  • Electrical is about production of current and electronics is about the control on current.
  • Electrical is the flow of electrons while electronics is flow of electrons and holes.
  • Electrical deals with high current and high power and high voltage(AC) but electronics use low current and low power and also low voltage(DC).
