Difference between Ductility and Malleability

Main Difference

The Ductility and Malleability are the features related to the deforming capacity of the metals. It is the characteristic of the Ductility of a metal that makes it able to stretch with no danger of damage. If a Metal has the ductile property, then it is capable of extending in such a way that it will become able to be stretched out into wires. Due to this property, the copper wires are produced. If a metal is compressed to a certain extent and it shows deform capability, then this metal has the property of Malleability. Having the Malleability ability in the metals is very useful as they can be used for rolling or beating to form sheets. The aluminum foil is the example of the Malleability. The characteristic of the metals to be stretched into wires is known as the ductility while malleability is the property of the metals used for beating to sheets. Any metal having the capacity of altering to another form by pulling, compression or twisting is said to have the property of the Ductility. If a metal can be altered into another shape by the process of beating or hitting hard, then it has the property of the Malleability. From the term of Ductility, we mean the aptitude of metal to modify its shape under the presence of the tensile stress. On the other hand, from the term of Malleability, we mean the ability of metal to alter its form under the existence of the compressive stress.

Ductility

The concept of the ductility is very simple as it is the capacity of lots of metals present in this world to be bent in such an exclusive manner that their toughness is never lost. The shape made after the procedure of the ductility is flexible, but not easily broken. It is the Ductility ability of a solid material that makes it capable of undergoing the tensile stress. The level of solid material in the field of their extent to plastically deform with no fracture can be measured and described under the head of the ductility. In most of the cases, the ductility represents the extended capacity of the solid required for stretching into a wire if you drag it from the ends. From the fracture strains, you can measure the mechanical property of the ductility in metal. The last limit of the ductility can be calculated at the point where the strain is enough for the material to be fractured if we increase the tensile stresses along a single axis. The measurements of the reduction of the area from the starting point to the fracture point obtained during the test are also useful. The Ductility property belongs to the metals only. If a Metal possesses a very high ductility, it means that it can be easily controlled for useful purposes as compared to other solid materials. With the help of this feature, the wires are produced. To check the capacity of the Ductility in metal, the bend test is used in most of the cases.

Malleability

From the property of the Malleability in metal, we mean the ability to bear in that metal that is required for to be hammering or pressing it into the desired shape without the danger of breaking or cracking of that metal. It is the Malleability property that has great importance in the procedure of selecting the right materials for building and manufacturing products. The capacity of solid materials needed for undergoing in the compressive stress is known as the Malleability. If a metal has the high Malleability then it possesses more capacity to be shaped easily and more efficiently. The methods of the forming such as the forging, rolling, extrusion and indenting are used for Malleability. The metals having the highly malleable capabilities can be forged into very thin foils. To measure the malleability of metal, you have to check its ability to sustain while enhancing the pressure on it till the time when it can’t withstand without breaking.

Key Differences

  • The tolerance level of material to stretch without getting damaged is called Ductility. On the other side, the bearing level of material to deform under compression is known as the Malleability.
  • The Ductility is the characteristic of metal required to modify its shape while keeping tensile stress on it. The ability of metal to change its appearance while maintaining the compressive stress on it is called Malleability.
  • To measure the ductility ability of metal, you need to examine its tensile strength. But to measure the malleability in metal, you need to check its capacity to sustain the pressure until it is no longer able to withstand without breaking.
  • If a Metal shows the high level of ductile property, then it can be stretched into wires. The metals which have greater malleable property can be rolled or beaten into sheets.
  • The bend test is the commonly used to determine the ductility of metal. The level of pressure till the broken limit of metal reaches for measuring the malleable property.
