Difference between Octopus and Squid

Main Difference

Squids and Octopus are species that belong to the same family and can be considered the cousins of each other. They do not look similar, and that is perhaps the biggest difference but have the same body structures. The main difference between the two species can be their appearance which for an octopus is a body with bulging eyes and has eight arms with two rows of suckers while the body of squid has eight arms, two fins along with two tentacles with sucker rings and look like a pen.

Octopus

These are the sea animals which are famous because of their body structure that is unique in comparison to others. The thing that helps them stay different from others is that they have eight arms along with bodies that are around and eyes which are bulging out. These are mostly found in places which have warm water, and therefore all the oceans have them at one location or the other. Some of them like to stay on the surface of the water but most are found under the surface in the dark waters and stay on the base. They look dangerous from the outlook and therefore are known as monsters of the deep sea. The food they eat includes other animals such as crabs, shrimps, and lobsters while in some cases they also attack larger species such as dolphins and sharks and are able to control them. For this purpose, they use their arms which have suction power and pull the animal in their mouth. That said, they are also the source of food for other animals in the sea and seals, whales and even other large fishes are able to kill and eat them. Another interesting feature about them is that they are able to swim backward and forwards with the same speed and that is made possible with the muscular tube present on their body which is known as a siphon. They are able to crawl on the sea surface as well and are found in many colors. Another interesting feature about them is that they shoot inky fluid in water to confuse the species that attack octopus and have a fast speed which helps them in the running away.

Squid

The interesting thing about this species is that it is one of the rare ones about which human beings have not been able to know a lot. There are more than 300 species of this organism that have been identified, but it is believed that there are much more. The only features and information we have about them are the ones which are found dead on the sea surface. They are found in waters where the temperature changes at a fast rate and therefore, can be seen in the fresh and salt water equally. They have soft bodies which are shaped like a pen, the body softness makes sure they are able to become easy prey for other animals while the pen-like structure helps them to run at a fast speed. They are also found in various sizes; a small squid will be around 60 cm while the biggest ones can be as massive as 60 feet in length which are usually 900 kg in weight. Another interesting feature about them is that they have big eyes which have a long range because of which they can easily see over long distances and deep or dark waters. Their life span is also long where they can survive from 9 months to almost 5 years. Just like other members of the family, they have eight arms, with two additional tentacles which help them to control their food and bring it near the mouth. Their food is usually other fishes, shrimps and even their own family of smaller squids while in some cases they even get to attack whales of smaller sizes.

Key Differences

  • The food on which squid spend their life includes fish, shrimp, other squid, and in some cases whales of smaller sizes while the food of an octopus includes animals such as crabs, shrimps, and lobsters while in some cases they also attack larger species such as dolphins.
  • The octopus has a body with bulging eyes and has eight arms with two rows of suckers while the body of squid has eight arms, two fins along with two tentacles with sucker rings.
  • Octopus do not have any hard surface on the body and are without bones and shell while squids have a rigid structure from the outside but are softer and look like a pen.
  • Octopus live on the surface of the sea in deep waters while shrimp live in open oceans and therefore hard to find.
  • An octopus can live for around one to three years while a shrimp can live from nine months to five years.
  • The size of an octopus ranges from 1 cm to 5 meters while the scale of a squid ranges from 60 cm to 20 meters.
